Sarno's theory

"Fortunately for fibromyalgia sufferers, New York physician John E. Sarno, M.D., didn't wait around for biochemists to sort out which particular malfunctions create back pain before he developed a way to halt it in his patients. He found evidence that one major area of the brain, the limbic system, generates the chemicals whose effects can include turning on that awful pain. Armed with that insight and with exceptional sensitivity to his patients' concerns, Dr. Sarno devised a very effective way to treat back pain and related complaints. His method depended on his theory that the mind and body work together to produce the pain of what he calls tension myositis syndrome, or TMS. This theory was far enough outside medicine's mainstream that doctors weren't quick to duplicate his treatment, but word of his successes is spreading - and along with it go knowledge, understanding, and slow acceptance."

"With the help of a colleague who knew of Dr. Sarno's work, Dr. Selfridge figured out how to apply Dr. Sarno's theory to understanding what was fueling her fibromyalgia. In four to five weeks her pain was almost a memory...." - page 22

"Fibromyalgia is a mind-body disorder that will spread in epidemic fashion if it is not recognized as such. Dr. Selfridge and Mr. Peterson are pioneers and humanitarians, and I salute them for their courage and their devotion to the needs of people who suffer from fibromyalgia - from the foreword by John Sarno, M.D."
