CeraLyte® Conquering Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The Link Between CFS and Blood Pressure

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have carried out the first study to show that CFS symptoms can be improved when treatment is aimed at neurally mediated hypotension, a blood pressure regulation disorder also called the fainting reflex. Hypotension is the medical term for low blood pressure. Neurally mediated hypotension occurs when there is abnormal reflex interaction between the heart and the brain. The condition can cause fainting, lightheaded-ness, headaches, mental confusion, and chronic fatigue.

Findings from the Hopkins study, which were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, revealed that such symptoms cleared up after the neurally mediated hypotension was diagnosed and treated.

Twenty-two of 23 patients with CFS tested positive for neurally mediated hypotension. After treatment, nine patients reported almost complete recovery from fatigue, while others noted some level of improvement.

Neurally mediated hypotension cannot be detected through routine blood pressure testing, but rather through what’s known as the Tilt Table Test. Each patient in the Hopkins study underwent the test, which is performed by having the patient lie down on a table. The table is then gradually raised to a near vertical position and the patient’s blood pressure is monitored.

In a person without CFS, the blood pressure will not change much while on the table. But someone with CFS eventually experiences a drop in blood pressure. The same change that occurs on the tilt table also occurs when the person stands up. Normally when we stand up we experience a surge of adrenalin that makes the heart beat faster, allowing the blood returning to our heart to be pumped more efficiently. But people with neurally mediated hypotension experience more pooling of blood in the legs which keeps blood away from the areas where it’s needed. When blood pressure levels are inadequate and organs do not receive needed oxygen or nutrients, the result can be extreme fatigue and fainting.

Increasing Salts and Fluids

Participants with neurally mediated hypotension in the Hopkins study were treated with drugs commonly used to regulate blood pressure, as well as increased salt and fluid intake, though researchers warned that drugs or dietary changes alone may not be effective.

According to members of the Hopkins Neurally Mediated Hypotension Working Group, low salt intake is a treatable problem in patients with neurally mediated hypotension. Salt helps us retain fluid in our blood vessels and maintain a healthy blood pressure.

The Hopkins working group members say that though salt has been labeled as a major contributor to high blood pressure in some people, a low salt diet isn’t for everyone. “For individuals with neurally mediated hypotension, a low salt intake may be unhealthy,” the researchers state in a recent paper. Not getting enough salt can lead to the symptoms of fatigue and lightheadedness.

The researchers point out that for the increased salt to work, there must also be increased water. “Not just any salt and water mixture will do,” according to David Sack, MD, a physician at Hopkins. “It has to be the right proportion of salt and water.”

It is possible to increase blood volume by rehydrating a person with intravenous fluids. But this is neither cost-effective nor practical, Dr. Sack said. Americans have leaned toward such high technology efforts, “but if we can give an oral solution that is cheaper and allows people to be more independent, then why shouldn’t we?”

CeraLyte®: Restoring the Salt Balance

The renowned British medical journal, The Lancet, called an Oral Rehydration Solution the “miracle solution of this century” because it is an effective, simple and low cost way to prevent death or serious consequences from dehyrdation. And the World Health Organization has deemed an ORS the recommended treatment for any kind of dehydration worldwide.

Rice-based solutions provide enhanced absorption for rapid restoration of fluid volume and cell balance, thereby promoting early recovery of intestinal function. Compared with glucose (and especially over “just any fluid),” rice-based solutions reduce fluid losses by 20 to 30 percent, shorten diarrhea episodes by about one day, and promote a quicker recovery....

Cure # 11: Water cures depression, loss of libido, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy.

These conditions are caused by prolonged chronic dehydration. They will clear up once the body becomes well and regularly hydrated. In these conditions, exercising one's muscles should be part of the treatment program.

    Hey you guys!

I've just visited your great web site and read all about the water cure! What a great job you've done in supplying all this valuable information! I heartedly agree with the good Doctor (what a great story!), and have been an advocate of "Hydration Therapy" (I'm not sure if he or someone else is the author of it here in the west) for years as the "first therapy" that should be given in all circumstances, and continued throughout life. I further believe that because amino acid metabolism is so heavily skewed because of dehydration, we need not only liberal amounts of salt every day, but also a supplementation of Free Form Amino Acids as well. I promise you, that you will feel the difference!

By the way, this idea that we should all be on low-salt diets is a misnomer caused by published research done back in the 40's on southern African-American Males, who had difficulties tolerating salt. Unfortunately, the results were applied to the entire population (wrong!) resulting in many white Americans now suffering from chronic fatigue and Epstein-Barr Syndrome.

Luckily just a few years ago, John-Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, discovered that most chronic fatigue symptoms disappeared within 1-2 hrs after being given ordinary table salt (sea salt would have been better), and that chronic fatigue was generally caused by chronic low levels of salt in the body, and yes, systemic dehydration!

    Small world isn't it!

Look forward to speaking with you again.

The following letter is from a woman whose brother was cured of chronic fatigue syndrome by greatly increasing his intake of water. Her letter was written to a government researcher, whose name we shall keep confidential:

From: M. H. Potomic, Maryland

My 36 year-old brother has suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for one year. He has tried everything including vitamin therapy, acupuncture, bed rest, various medications, special diets, etc. Some of these treatments seemed to help but the symptoms returned. I mentioned to a doctor friend of mine, Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, that my brother suffered from CFS and how much his life changed since the symptoms appeared. He told me about his research and suggested that my brother increase his water intake. He spoke to my brother every day, long distance, to encourage him. My brother gradually increased his water intake based on these daily conversations. Within two weeks, he was better, within four weeks, he was even better. My whole family was amazed that he could be so much better with something as simple as WATER. Four months later, he is doing extremely well.

My brother finds that when he adds alcohol to his fluid intake, the symptoms reappear. The alcohol had a dehydrating effect. It seems unbelievable that something so simple could have an amazing effect. I would love to see you do some research on this simple effective treatment. The CFS sufferers in the nation would be most grateful to you to spread this information. I would be most interested in your comments on Dr. Batmanghelidj's book.

Editor's Note: The government researcher was NOT interested. He scoffed at the idea that something as simple as water could cure this condition. We called M.H. ourselves. She told us the following:

"My brother was 36 years old and perfectly normal and then one day he had all of this pain in his arm and chest. He thought he was having a heart attack. He rushed himself to the emergency room, but doctors thought it was stress. Then, he went to ten different doctors, tranquilizers, etc. with no help. They thought he might have Lyme's Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, or whatever. They could never find anything wrong with him. This hit the man and he was in bed, he couldn't work, he couldn't do anything. He lived his life waiting to go to the next doctor. Dr. Batmangehlidj called him every day for two weeks and he started improving on the water.

It has now been about the two-year mark and the man is 75% his old self again. He is now out in his motorboat, driving fourteen or fifteen children and adults around, water skiing, boating, up and down the waves, picnic lunching. He is just unbelievable. This is a guy who had chronic fatigue syndrome and he gets mad because he is feeling tired after this."

A MIRACLE FOR FREE

The remedy for your medical problems may be as close as your faucet!   Pigs will fly before the medical establishment will disclose something simple and free in lieu of costly (and frequently dangerous) medications.

In forty years of practice I have seen many apparent miracles produced solely by plain water.   You won't believe what 8-10 eight-ounce glasses of water per day will do for many maladies.

There is one major problem:

People won't drink that much due to the inconvenience of frequent urination . . . a small price to pay for better health.   If your urine is not a very pale yellow, or even clear, you are not getting enough water (does not apply to those taking B-complex vitamins as these turn the urine bright yellow).

When I speak of water I do NOT refer to coffee, sodas or tea.   Distilled or spring is best but tap water will work just fine for most people. Some places have water which has an odor and is not at all that tasty.   Put a jug in the fridge for a few days and it will taste better.   In addition, much of the chlorine will vanish.  Prior to drinking, shake it vigorously for a while.   This will oxygenate it.

Cure # 2: Water may prevent and cure arthritis.

Rheumatoid Joint Pain - Arthritis - may be a signal of water shortage in the painful joint.   It can affect the young as well as the old. The use of pain-killers does not cure the problem, but exposes the person to further damage from pain medications.   Intake of water and small amounts of salt will cure this problem.

Cure # 11: Depression, Loss of libido, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Lupus, Multiple sclerosis, Muscular dystrophy.

These conditions may be caused by prolonged chronic dehydration.   If so, they will clear up once the body becomes well and regularly hydrated. In these conditions, exercising one's muscles should be part of the treatment program.
