My daughter wanted a pet really badly. One by one we had lost our cats. Our last one was hit by a car. I tried having indoor cats but the cats would run out the door at the worst times.

We were moving and I didn't want a large dog or an indoor cat so I told Maggie that I would agree to a small dog. Maggie would cut ads out of the newspaper and leave them on the kitchen counter. She finally talked me into going to the Erie County Humane Society. The first time we went once - it was closed. The next time we did get to look at all the dogs in the pens. They had three beautiful poodles that had been raised for breeding and were not housebroken. They had lived in a kennel all their lives. They had a terrier that some people had taken home and returned. And they had a couple large dogs.

We were just about ready to leave when this filthy little dog with matted hair ran into the room and jumped into the caretaker's arms. The dog had just been brought in. She escaped from the room where they had put her. Mattie had been caught in a cat trap. We agreed we wanted her and were able to take her home after a couple days. She was about 6 years old when we adopted her. She loves to sit on my lap and go for walks on the beach with me.

We have decided that Mattie is a "chi-poo" (chihuahua-poodle).

Sadly, I had Mattie put down the day before mom died.
