Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

"Clinical dietitian Nancy Kraft, RD, of the University of Iowa, reports that a common type of sugar called fructose has been shown to cause the gas, agonizing cramps, bloating and diarrhea of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). And her extensive research shows that ending your misery can be as simple as avoiding fructose-rich foods. Sound unlikely? We double-checked with Dr. Theodore M. Bayless of John Hopkins University. He confirms, 'Anyone who is gassy with or without IBS will benefit from decreasing the intake of fructose.' " -

Shortly after my husband and I moved to the desert in Tucson, Arizona in 1967, he began to complain of stomach pains. Of course we went to the doctor and he came up with the answer, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I'm sure they gave him something to take, but it was almost 12 years ago and I don't remember what it was, but it did not help. He continued to complain to the doctor and after tests looking into his abdominal area and up his colon, finding nothing wrong he was told it was all in his head. To make a long story short, by the beginning of 1999 the pain reached a point where he was not eating, was losing weight, and went down to 112 pounds. The doctors, including specialists, came up with the same answer and they gave him anti-stress medicine.  Finally the pain got so bad my husband asked me to take him to the hospital. Knowing they would probably want to do an exploratory, which many people never come out of, I phoned a nutritionist friend of ours and he told me to give my husband 2 glasses of water within 20 minutes and if the pain persisted give him another glass. Hurrah! It worked and he didn't have to take the third glass. My husband, a terrible skeptic, became a believer. He knows if the slightest pain comes back he didn't drink enough water that day. Not only did it take the pain away, but also his heartburn.
