is used in Japan to treat low natural killer syndrome (LNKS) which is identical to the illness called chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is the US. In 1985 Dr. Tadao Aoki of the Shinrakuen Hospital in Japan reported that an undisclosed number of LNKS patients who received lentinan injections (1 mg/day, every other day) experienced a gradual improvement in "dullness." In addition, body temperature and natural killer activity gradually returned to normal. Complete recovery in the majority of patients occurred within a few months. Two years later in 1987, Dr. Aoki and Dr. Ronald Herberman of the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the world's authority on natural killer cells, reported on 23 Japanese LNKS patients. They ranged in age from 14-77, but the majority were under 40 and had presented LNKS symptoms of long-standing duration, some for over 20 years. Treatment with lentinan required 6 months or more to bring their NK activity to within normal range. In only a few weeks, however, fevers disappeared and the feeling of "well-being" returned.
